Artists Canvas

Boxes (38mm)

What we call the "box" frame is the deeper chassis, at 40mm. The 40mm box can also have wedges, and is a very substantial frame for particularly large canvases. The larger frames are all reinforced with cross bars. We are able to make any depth or shape on request. The spacers (“chocks” or “wedges”) are all handmade as well, and unlike some canvasses , actually work! This allows the painter to tighten the canvas if, due to warmth it has become slightly loose or ‘bouncy’.

Box canvasses are very popular amongst our artists, since they don't have to be framed once they are completed and can be hung as is.

At ET&H, we can go as deep as 100mm box if need be, with wedges being advisable up to a maximum of 50mm depth.

All our frames are rebated (cut at a special, 45 degree angle), which means that your canvas won't touch the frame when you are painting on it, which can happen on a 'square' frame, which then becomes visible through the fabric.

Stretchers (23mm)

Because we specialize in "custom" canvas, we offer a variety of stretchers: with or without wedges - both of these have a 23mm profile.

Stretchers are obviously less deep than box canvasses, and are often utilised by artists who want to frame their works on completion.
